I don’t think that the survival of a civilization is necessarily consistent with happiness and complete freedom from suffering of all of it’s members; nor, therefore, can the survival of an ecosystem be. I think the principal rule to remember is that the goal of creation might not necessarily have been minimization of suffering. It indeed cannot have been since there was no suffering before, and had life not been created, there would be none after. It could have been the maximization of happiness, a condition we could define as the most individuals being the most happy (sloppily, I admit). Thus population maximization becomes an implicit goal and the conflict over populations for resources, etc, inevitably creates strife. Suffering is the price that must be paid in order for there to be joy in the world.
